After having 1.5 years of experience as a reporter, he then joined the renowned media outlet Daily Muslim as a staff reporter from 1990 to the end of 1991. He joined as a reporter at the Daily the News in 1991, where he got promoted to chief reporter and became prominent with his story-telling and in-depth coverage of cricket, economic, and political issues.

After being appointed as a governing board member of PCB, Shaikh played a crucial role in finalising complex decisions and formulating policies that can enhance the standard of Pakistan’s cricket landscape. Shakil Shaikh formerly served as the head of PCB in the Islamabad region from December 22nd, 2022 till July 20th, 2023.
So far, he has served as a member of the PCB Board of Governors three times and also took on the role of chairman in various committees including Cricket, Awards, Domestic Affairs, Upgradation of Pitches and Building of Outdoor Gyms, Umpire, Infrastructure, and regional Support Staff Performance Evaluation.
The establishment of a domestic cricket structure was one of his notable achievements in 2009 to streamline local cricket tournaments and revolutionise the domestic cricket standards in the Pakistan cricket industry. Shakil Shaikh then took part in the renovation of the domestic cricket structure, focusing on optimizing cricket tournaments, enhancing player welfare systems, and ensuring the long-term development of the cricket industry.

During this period, a major achievement was revamping the grassroots setup by conducting elections and uplifting the district and regional cricket industry. A total of 105 districts and 16 regions were uplifted and young talents from those regions gained the interest of Pakistan cricket industry’s authorities, leading to their international cricket careers. As a result of this, the PCB is ready to appoint Shaikh as the new chief selector because of his deep understanding of domestic cricket in the country.

However, Shaikh has turned down this offer, rather wants to accompany Najam Sethi, chairperson of the PCB on monitoring internal affairs. Later, he warned the people behind the #sochnabimanah campaign on his Twitter page. In December 2021, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz constituted the PCB management committee to restore the 2014 constitution. Najam Sethi heads the committee, while other members including Shaikh have started working towards the restoration of departments under the 2014 PCB Constitution.
PCB’s reamended constitution passed the dictatorial powers of the chairman to the newly appointed managing director, resulting in efficient and consistent government practices. The Movement for Restoration of Cricket and Associations was created to showcase the measures, activities, and campaigns towards the restoration of the 2014 constitution to the public. The revised constitution enhanced the cricket administration and helped in achieving PCB’s operations with international best practices.
With the assistance of committee members, departmental cricket was revoked and six new regions were introduced. Shaikh has defended PCB on multiple occasions which demonstrates his commitment to his role as a reputable member of PCB. Shakil Shaikh referred to Wasim Akram as a king of betting after the former Pakistan captain threatened and questioned the PCB’s decision to form an inquiry committee on the team’s awful show in Asia Cup T20.
By drawing a comparison between the PCB chairmanships of Najam Sethi and Ramiz Raja, he has also defended PCB chairman Najam Sethi against fake trollers for trending a fake expenses table. He further went on and state that there was no comparison to the outstanding job done by Najam Sethi.
